Who We Are

Sage House is a group therapy practice serving the mental health needs of adults, children, teens, and families in Northern Virginia. Headquartered in the heart of Reston Virginia, our Reston therapy services serve a wide range of mental health concerns. Our team of Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC), Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT) and Registered, Board-Certified Art Therapists (ATR-BC) bring years of education, training, and experience to their work. Our clinicians partner with you to listen and understand your concerns and create realistic, obtainable therapy goals. We draw from years of experience to create a customized approach to not only meet your needs but to give you noticeable, long-lasting results. From the first session, our goal is to help you and your family move in the direction of a more fulfilled and enjoyable life. We believe each person is capable of living their best life because we have seen our clients do this time and again. Our practice is also a place for individuals and families to find a community of support. We offer art therapy support groups and women’s circles to support the work being done in individual and family therapy.

We Know Change Is Possible

Sometimes life can feel really hard. Perhaps a relationship is struggling, work obligations feel overwhelming, or nothing seems to be going your way. Maybe you or a loved one is facing a new medical diagnosis, a loss, or a major life transition. Maybe you are a parent whose child is struggling emotionally or at school and you just don’t know what to do. We have been there before too. We know how hard it is and we are here because you don’t have to do it alone.

We are also here to make change happen for you. We believe in change, we have seen it happen and our therapists are specially trained to create a treatment plan that is effective while embracing who you are and what you want your life to look like. We value the trust you have put in our clinicians to partner with you. Our clinicians bring years of experience and expertise to their work with you and your family.

Sage House Counseling & Art Therapy was born out of the need for effective, mental health support that includes traditional counseling as well as art therapy, sand tray therapy, play therapy and mindfulness. We know the unique challenges families face and the need to be supported with effective, evidence-based approaches. We also know that therapy is not a one size fits all approach. Each person brings their own interests, strengths, and areas of challenge to therapy. Our clinicians are open, knowledgeable experts in specific areas that allow them to understand the unique needs of each client. This includes adults, children, and teens struggling with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship issues, ADD, substance abuse, eating disorders, perinatal mental health, grief and loss, and chronic medical issues.

Our Approach

Our unique approach, which offers a combination of traditional counseling, art therapy, play therapy, sand tray therapy, and mindfulness allows each client to find a tailored approach that meets their needs. Our goal is to provide each adult, child, teen, and family with new skills and insights, allowing for lasting change and greater wellbeing. We listen to what you feel comfortable incorporating into your therapy and then create the most effective plan to reach your therapy goals.

We find most of our adult clients initially seek traditional talk therapy as that is familiar to most people. However, we have found clients who are open to incorporating art, sand tray, and/or mindfulness into their treatment plans have greater insight, better outcomes, and more lasting change. These clients also reported enjoying the therapy process more than talk therapy alone.

For some children, therapy can feel overwhelming and scary, but the creative process allows many children to find comfort in the therapy space. Art-making with crayons, paint, and clay is familiar and allows children to more quickly connect with the therapist and form a trusting bond, laying the foundation for a relationship and expression.

For teens who may be reluctant to participate in therapy or feel self-conscious about sharing concerns, we find the combination of talk therapy, art, and sand tray therapies allows teens to gain mastery over their feeling, build a trusting relationship with the therapist and ultimately allow for emotional expression and connection.

For this reason, our therapists incorporate art, sand tray, and play therapies into most treatment plans. We also work with parents to provide supportive art therapy and mindfulness-based interventions to use at home in order to encourage lasting change and support. Our interventions are backed by evidence-based research as well as our own clinical experience.

We Make Therapy Accessible

We also believe therapy should be accessible by offering both in and out of network therapy sessions. The majority of our clinicians are in-network providers with Anthem BCBS PPO plans and preferred out of network providers with Kaiser Permanente. We offer complimentary claim submission for all of our In network and out of network clients to ensure you can make the most of your insurance benefits! The majority of our out of network clients receive out of network reimbursements through our courtesy submission process, making the investment in therapy possible, and at times comparable to a co-pay.
