EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a technique used to treat trauma and PTSD symptoms.
During EMDR, patients recall a traumatic memory while following a rhythmic visual stimulus with their eyes. The goal of EMDR treatment is to reduce the emotional charge of the memory so that it can be discussed and processed during the therapy session and depression and anxiety symptoms associated with the memory can be eliminated.
EMDR is commonly used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but this targeted, short term, intensive treatment can also help with other conditions like panic attacks, eating disorders, and anxiety.
EMDR sessions usually follow an eight-phase approach, with processing of a specific memory typically taking one to three sessions.
